Quick formula

Tax = price Γ— rate Γ· 100. Total = price + tax. Change the rate to model a different scenario.

For a real transaction, confirm the applicable rate, exemptions, registration rules, and rounding with the current official guidance.

Choosing a Canadian GST/HST rate

This calculator applies one percentage to a pre-tax amount. Choose the rate for the province or territory where the supply is considered made, not simply the seller's home province. The type of supply and the customer can also affect the treatment.

GST, HST and separate provincial tax

The Canada Revenue Agency's current table shows 5% GST in non-participating provinces and territories, 13% HST in Ontario, 14% HST in Nova Scotia, and 15% HST in the other participating provinces. British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan also list separate provincial sales tax rates. This simple tool calculates only the single rate you enter; it does not add a second PST or QST layer automatically.

For example, a $200 taxable supply at 13% produces $26 tax and a $226 total. A zero-rated supply uses 0%, while an exempt supply is not interchangeable with zero-rated treatment for business reporting.

What to verify

Check the place-of-supply rule, whether the supply is taxable, zero-rated or exempt, and whether provincial tax must be calculated separately. If the displayed price already includes tax, do not add the entered rate again. CRA notes that rounding can make an official total differ by a cent or two.
