Quick formula

Tax = price Γ— rate Γ· 100. Total = price + tax. Change the rate to model a different scenario.

For a real transaction, confirm the applicable rate, exemptions, registration rules, and rounding with the current official guidance.

How to use this U.S. sales tax estimate

This calculator applies one combined percentage to a pre-tax price. Enter the rate that applies to the actual delivery or purchase location; do not treat the example rate as a nationwide rate. State, county, city, and special-district charges can produce different combined rates, and the tax base can vary by product or service.

What the result includes

The tax amount is price Γ— rate Γ· 100. The displayed total is the price plus that estimate. For example, a $125 taxable item at 7.25% produces $9.06 of estimated tax and a $134.06 total after cent rounding.

The tool does not decide whether an item is taxable, locate the correct jurisdiction, handle tax holidays, or calculate marketplace and business filing obligations. A delivery address can matter for online purchases. Confirm the rate and treatment with the relevant state or local revenue agency or the seller's invoice.

A useful comparison workflow

Start with the quoted pre-tax amount, then test the combined rate for each location you are comparing. Keep shipping, fees, and other taxable charges consistent. If a receipt already shows tax, compare its tax divided by the taxable subtotal with the rate you expected; do not add tax a second time.

The IRS describes general sales taxes as state and local taxes and publishes material showing that local tax bases and rates can differ. Its guidance is useful context, but the authority responsible for a purchase's rate is the applicable state or local tax agency.
